Altered Book Accordion Art Journal

with Sandee Bartsch

Thursday, December 15, 2016
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

The topic of this class is art journaling.

In order to begin the practice of visual journaling; it is a good idea to have one place to keep your entries together.  Nothing sets a tone more than making your own art journal.

Rather than learning the intricate skills of bookbinding, to create your own journal, there is a shortcut, called, the ‘altered book.’

Simply put, an altered book is a hard cover book that is altered. This means, cutting, tearing, taping and gluing an old bought hard cover book. I know it sounds sacrilegious to do all of the above mentioned to a book, I look at it as bringing new life to an old worn out book. Just think of it a way to recycle or “out with the old, in with the new!”

This is a simple journal to make, great for beginners, that generates expert results. This journal is portable, versatile and fun to make!

Supplies to bring:

The main ingredient is:
  • An old hard covered book, with signatures sewn in the book pages. Hint: Find a hardcover book that has a sewn thread through the pages. Or, look at the top of the book. If you see a visible (small) space between the spine and the book pages, this would be a good book for altering.
Other materials:
  • Seam ripper
  • Small sharp scissors
  • Small self healing mat (8 ½ x 11)
  • X-acto knife
  • Old gift card
  • Metal ruler
  • Rag or baby wipes
  • 1-inch masking tape
  • Aleene’s original tacky Glue
Optional:
  • Washi Tape, or any other decorative tape, you may have on hand.
